Maria Montessori writes that “When a new being comes into existence, it contains within itself mysterious guiding principles which will be the source of its work, character and adaptation to its surroundings.”2 Ours, she goes on, is to protect the child or “spiritual embryo,” by providing an “external environment that is warm with love and rich with nourishment”3 and then, allow the child’s “inner sensibilities to choose what is suitable and necessary for his/her growth.”
