Morning Altars

October 11, 2021

By Day Schildkret

(2018) The Countrymen Press, A Division of W.W. Norton & Company, New York, NY

Earth artist Day Schildkret’s Morning Altars is a treasure that will nurture the spirits of foragers of all ages! While not expressly written for young children, Morning Altars is an invitation for ALL to see the world through fresh eyes and create beauty from natural gifts that might otherwise be overlooked. Pinecones, maple keys, feathers, pebbles, shells and berries are just a few of the limitless gifts of the earth he employs to create extraordinary, mandala-like, daily celebrations! Start simple. Try creating a circle, a spiral, a smiling face, a heart...

The practice of noticing is natural to the very young. At one point or another every “thing” becomes the focus of their attention, and thereby filled with wonder and love. Ours is to highlight, cultivate and celebrate this natural predisposition. - To Keep it ALIVE - and in so doing, rebirth it in ourselves!

If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you,

You are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows

Where you are. You must let it find you.

(excerpt from the poem “Lost” by David Wagoner)
